Implanted microchips for pets have become a great addition in the effort to help lost pets reunite with their owners. While they can still be considered “expensive” for some pet owners, they can be a huge help if your pet ends up in a shelter. There are a couple of issues that I thought I would bring up that would make them even more effective.

Microchips are useful for a lost pet if two conditions are met.

1. Someone knows the pet has one and gets it scanned.
2. The owner information connected with the pet is up to date.

I think many people that “find” a lost pet may not even consider that a pet might be microchipped. It is a bit like a car having a license plate that only the police know about and can read. Since the chip is implanted under the skin of the pet, the only way for someone to know if the pet has a chip is to take it to a vet or shelter to have the pet scanned.

We all need to help get the word out to those compassionate people, who out of their own kindness, take in a “lost” pet. This might be the most effective and fastest way to reunite lost pets with their owners. Many of these good people go to great efforts to find the family of the “lost” pet. Little do they know that they may have answer right on the pet.

So let me be one to say, if you find a lost pet, thank you for caring for the animal. Please take the pet to a shelter or vet and ask if they can scan it for a microchip. You can be the connecting link in returning the pet to their family.

To all of us that have a pet microchipped. Make sure you keep the information up to date. If you move, you have to register your car. At the same time, update your pet’s information as well. The microchips are only good if the information linked to them is accurate.
